Pearl Monument

1939 pearling was one of Qatar’s primary revenue streams. Hence, the pearl’s significance is still honored throughout Qatar today. In the Persian Gulf's waters, divers used to put their lives at risk to discover these treasures. In order to gather oysters from the sea floor, swimmers had to free dive up to 100 feet (30 meters). They were then quickly hauled to the surface to dump their oysters before making more dives. To find one nice pearl, hundreds or thousands of oysters might have been needed. This giant monument is built in honor of that tradition.

Near the Pearl Monument, you can go on a dhow and cruise the other side of the bay.
